Shiatsu is a system of healing and health maintenance closely related to Acupuncture using hands instead of needles to treat the body.

The word ‘Shiatsu’ means finger pressure. It has developed from traditional Chinese and Japanese massage as well as other disciplines of oriental medicine including Acupuncture, nutritional and exercise programmes.

At the heart of Shiatsu is the aim to enable Chi (vital energy) to flow smoothly throughout the body.

The free flow of Chi can be disrupted for a number of reasons which results in all kinds of symptoms manifesting. They can be physical, emotional, mental or even spiritual in nature; often it’s a combination.

A Shiatsu Practitioner will consider your general state of health and energy level and any symptoms you are experiencing, even if these are dismissed or unexplainable by your GP.

Treatments focus on the channels, which transport Chi around the body nourishing the internal organs and in turn distributing their energy.

Depending on what is appropriate for you a variety of techniques can be used to improve your energy flow. These might include anything from gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees or feet to more dynamic stretches and rotations.

As the quality and flow of Chi improves the symptoms associated gradually improve.
Since Shiatsu works directly with energy on different levels the effects are much more profound than other physical therapies. It is also very enjoyable to receive.

Treatments take place on a padded matt (futon) on the floor, although this can be adapted if needed. You will remain clothed, so it’s best to wear something loose and comfortable.

Some benefits you might feel from having Shiatsu treatments:

Relaxes mind and body on a deep level
Restores and balances energy
Eases tension and stiffness
Improves breathing
Improves posture and flexibility
Improves circulation
Enhances wellbeing

Shiatsu is supportive for a wide range of conditions as it strengthens the body’s ability to heal itself. It is particularly effective for stress related tension and illnesses, but equally useful for maintaining good health and promoting a healthy pregnancy.

Shiatsu combines the great healing properties of human touch with the empirical wisdom accumulated over thousands of years by oriental medicine.
